Join us for an evening of inspiration, celebration, wine and
hors d'oeuvres
At “Honoring Pioneers of the Environmental Health Movement”, we'll be honoring risk-takers and pioneers of the environmental health movement, going back to the 1980’s. We’ll be honoring:
- Barry Commoner, a pioneer of the environmental movement and called "the Paul Revere of Ecology" by Time magazine, is a renowned cellular biologist who investigated pollution problems and released precedent-setting studies on the widespread dispersal of persistent pollutants and the hazards of incineration.
- Judith Enck, was formerly Environmental Advocates Executive Director and NYPIRG Environmental and NYPIRG Environmental Program Director, and is currently Governor Paterson's Deputy Secretary for the Environment. Judith was just appointed as the EPA's Region 2 Administrator.
- Andrea Kydd, was a leading community activist and environmental organizer who served as the Health Program Director at the Nathan Cummings Foundation from 1989 to 2004.
Lois Marie Gibbs, founder of CHEJ and a community leader during the 1978 Love Canal crisis near Niagara Falls, NY, will attend and speak about these pioneers and risk-takers and the important work CHEJ is embarking on 30 years after the crisis at Love Canal.
We sincerely hope that you can join us for what promises to be a memorable party.

The Center for Health, Environment & Justice exists to mentor the movement to build healthier communities by empowering people to prevent harm in as many ways, and for as many people, as possible. We believe this can happen when people and groups have the power to play an integral role in promoting human health and environmental integrity. CHEJ’s role is to provide the tools, the direction, and the encouragement to these people and groups, so that they can build strong, healthy communities where they live, work, learn, shop, play and pray. Following her successful effort to prevent further harm for the people living in contaminated Love Canal, Lois Gibbs founded CHEJ in 1981 in order to continue mentoring others seeking to prevent harm. CHEJ provides mentoring assistance to communities, homeowners, families and individuals throughout the country. To date, CHEJ has assisted over 10,000 groups nationwide. Currently, CHEJ is mentoring community groups in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Ohio. Details on CHEJ’s efforts to help people and communities prevent harm can be found at http://chej.org/ .
